Medical Social Workers (MSWs) are trained in social work and counselling to assess the psychological and social needs of persons with mental health conditions and those that support them.

We aim to improve the quality and continuity of care through:

  • Caregiver support and training to educate families on mental health conditions, such as schizophrenia and depression, and to introduce coping strategies, i.e. for caregivers to care for themselves as well as for their patients.
  • Community outreach and talks to educate our community partners about mental health conditions. These educational sessions can be conducted through seminars, talks or workshops.
  • Community training (interdisciplinary)- our MSWs are also posted to community-based programmes, including:

The Occupational Therapy department at IMH provides rehabilitative services for children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly with psychiatric conditions.

The education and training programme includes seminars and training workshops conducted by both local and overseas experts with rich and valuable experiences in the field of psychiatry and occupational therapy. We also provide clinical attachments for local students who may be interested in the fields of occupational therapy and art psychotherapy.

In keeping with our professional development, we also offer internship attachments for occupational therapists and healthcare professionals to promote the exchange of knowledge, skills and expertise.

Mental health physiotherapists are effective members of a multi-disciplinary team of doctors and allied health personnel. They bring a breadth of assessment and treatment expertise which complement prescribed medications and psychotherapy.

Adopting a holistic approach, physiotherapy allows for retention of essential simplicity and values necessary for healing of the whole person.

Physiotherapy, which complements prescribed medication and psychotherapy, is about educating patients about the importance of developing good postures to improve physical well-being, as well as to boost self-esteem. With a holistic approach that our physiotherapists take, exercise routines and programmes are also customized to suit the needs of every individual.

Caregivers are encouraged to be involved in their loved ones’ rehabilitation process to ensure continuous proper homecare.
