Family ties that bind: Rise of the moral compass
Uploaded on 8 May 2020
Parents fear that their children will turn bad when they grow up. According to American psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg, there are three distinct stages of moral development – selfish, selfless and self-determined levels. At the selfish level, the child does the right thing for fear of negative consequences. At the selfless level, he determines his behaviour based on societal norms to meet the expectations of others. At the highest level, which is also the self-determined level, the child would have internalised the rules they have learnt when they were young, and then try to determine for themselves what they think is a universal concept of the “right” behaviour. Use the acronym RISE to help develop the moral values in children and see how you could be the RISE of the moral compass.
