Understanding Your Mental Health

"There is no health without mental health"

Mental health is an integral and essential component of health. The World Health Organisation constitution states: "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."

Good mental health isn't just the absence of mental health problems. Being mentally or emotionally healthy is much more than being free of depression, anxiety, or other psychological issues. Rather than the absence of mental illness, mental and emotional health refers to the presence of positive characteristics.

Mental health is about how we think, feel and act as we cope with our lives. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices. Like physical health, mental health is important at every stage of life.

It is important to take charge of your mental health. Learn how to build your mental resilience and manage life’s ups and downs. It is also crucial to recognise when you or a loved one may need help from a professional.

According to the Singapore Mental Health Study 2010, the lifetime prevalence of mental illness in the Singapore resident population is 12%, which is about 1 in 8 people having a mental disorder. Major Depressive Disorder, Alcohol Abuse and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder were found to be the top three most common disorders here.
