Caring for someone with intellectual disability can be challenging for families and friends. Caregivers are concerned about their loved ones, but often find themselves frustrated, helpless or fearful due to their lack of knowledge and skills to manage their loved ones’ symptoms. Research has shown that caregivers are able to better cope with their caregiving role when provided with appropriate support.
The IMH Medical Social Work department will be collaborating with doctors, pharmacists and occupational therapists to conduct a Caregivers' Roadshow on Intellectual Disability as an initiative to reach out to caregivers of persons with intellectual disability, community partners and members of the public. The multi-disciplinary mental healthcare professionals aim to unravel intellectual disability, through explanations of available treatments and therapies, psychiatric medications and their side effects. Information on community resources and practical tips for caregiver coping will also be provided.
