IMH/WH is home to a large number of long stay patients who suffer from chronic mental illnesses. Many of them do not have any family support and in fact our hospital is home to them.

Our longest staying patient has been with us since 1946. Largely on welfare, these patients rely on the generosity of donors and well wishers to be able to enjoy the little things in life that we take for granted, for example, outings to places of interest, festive celebrations or even a haircut.

One way for individuals and corporations to give to these patients is through the WH Endowment Fund. The Fund was established to receive contributions and donations to provide welfare and medical care for needy patients at IMH/WH. In addition, the Fund also supports medical research and development as well as the promotion and development of mental health-related services in Singapore.

If you would like to make a donation, kindly make your cheque payable to "WH Endowment Fund", and send it to:

Every donation will be acknowledged with a tax-exempt official receipt. Kindly provide your name, mailing address, contact number, identification number and company registration number (if applicable) on the back of the cheque. Alternatively, you may choose to make a donation online at www.donation.org.sg.

WHERE DOES YOUR MONEY GO?

Money from the Woodbridge Hospital Endowment Fund supports projects and programmes which provide rehabilitation, welfare and subsidies for medical services. We need about $350,000 per year to support on-going programmes that benefits some 1,200 long stay and also selected outpatients. Almost all donations will go toward helping our patients directly and only a small portion (about 3%) goes toward administrative cost such as audit fees. Some of these programmes include:

Rehabilitation
Therapy Gardens @ IMH
Four gardens – each with its own theme –are being developed to provide patients with horticulture therapy. It is therapeutic for patients to spend time outdoors and do some gardening. For some of them, they will be able to take on simple gardening jobs to support themselves when they are discharged from the hospital.

Fund-2-Work
This “work trial” programme provides an incentive to employers who are otherwise reluctant to hire someone with mental illness. During the first two months of the employment, the WH Endowment Fund pays half of the patient’s salary, capped at $350 per month. After the trial period, the employer will fully employ the patient if his/her performance is satisfactory.

Food Service Rehabilitation Programme
Under this programme, patients go through a three-month course certified by the Institute of Technical Education to prepare them for work in the Food & Beverage industry. This includes on-the-job training at JuiceWorks, an F & B outlet in the hospital.

Patient Welfare
To give patients a semblance of normal life, outings and celebrations are organised on a regular basis. Disbursements are given to needy patients for food and other basic necessities. Some patients need help with the bus fare to keep up with their medical appointments at the hospital.

Subsidies for Medical Services
Although there is the Medifund, there are some patients from the lower income group who do not qualify for it because of the stringent criteria. Two programmes that have been identifies for support by the Endowment Fund are:

COPES – Children’s One-Stop Psycho-Educational Services
This programme offers a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary assessment and intervention service for children with learning, social or emotional problems. The fees ranges from $150 to $2500, depending on the number of sessions required.

Psychotherapy
Patients with mental illness usually need more than just medication. They also need psychotherapy. Some patients do not seek treatment because they cannot afford to pay for this service.
