The Intellectual Disability Clinic at IMH and the Community Wellness Clinic (CWC) serves the mental health needs of people with intellectual disability (PWID). This team, consisting of a psychiatrist, psychologists, an occupational therapist, and a medical social worker, has been specially trained to carry out assessments and interventions for intellectually disabled patients aged 19 to 64 years old. The work involves a comprehensive review of these patients for psychiatric co-morbidities and includes treatment modalities, such as behaviour therapy, addressing sensory issues, environmental manipulation, and improving communication skills.
PWIDs require more coordinated care due to the nature of their special needs. The different team members see each newly referred patient during the same clinic visit. The advantage of this is stronger interdisciplinary input throughout the entire care process, starting from the initial assessment.
IMH’s Intellectual Disability Service is offered to patients on an internal referral basis.
